About Jane

Welcome to Reflections Through a DeafLens. I’m Jane and we’ll be discussing Deaf art, theatre, and media (print, radio, film, television and the Internet). My background is in theatre, television, public relations, marketing, communications and media studies. One of my main areas of interest is Deaf Cinema.
Some months ago, I was clearing out my old study and stood amazed at the volume of information on Deaf art, theatre and media I had collected over the years. Standing in the middle of the room, surrounded by boxes, I thought to myself, “holy cow, what are you going to do with all this?”
Hence the website.
I look forward to expanding this site with additional information, discussions and links as we celebrate Deaf artists and their contributions to Deaf Culture and society in general. I have always believed that artists are people who see, feel and understand things more clearly than most people, and I hope you will agree with me as we explore their works. We respect, embrace and salute them, as true artists, for their courage and determination in communicating through their medium of choice. They have empowered us, and articulated in so many ways the joys, triumphs, hopes and struggles we all face in life.
Keep in mind that this website is a work in progress, so if you come across other Deaf artists or works related to Deaf art that you think I should know about, please let me know!
Enjoy and I look forward to hearing from you,
Jane

Hi,
Our Belgian Sign Language theatre, Hand in the Eye, has had very good responses from both Deaf and
hearing to its first performance earlier this year, and we have 2 new
projects in preparation for 2008, one including making a performance for
the painting collection of a famous Belgian museum.
Our website is both in Dutch and English, and some of the texts are also in
Flemish Sign Language.
Please feel free to take a look, you will find it a lovely visual website, but also, would it be possible to add our website to the performance listing on your website?
Thanks!

Jane,
I’m preparing the intro (guest) lecture in Linguistics about sign language myths, structure of sign languages, and all those familiar topics (familiar to us, but new to each generation of hearing university students) and was looking for some online resources to share. Thrilled to find your site!
And, I am having the same reaction as I read above: standing in my crowded study trying to decide what to do with this accumulated library of paper, video, and art! Your site is very inspirational. Why? Because of its comprehensiveness and its reliability.
Continued success!

Hi Jane,
You are doing a terrific job! I am just getting started myself. It’s similar to your “eureka” moment. I have all this stuff piling up in my office. So I will gradually be moving a lot of it to this site. Hope all is well with you these days.

I help run a Deaf and hearing integrated Drama group for young people based in Birmingham, England. We work towards 2 performances a year which incorporate both signing and the spoken word to make it accessible for all of our audience. We have just returned from The Big Youth Theatre Festival in Kent where we performed a Sign Song, Snow Patrol’s ‘Open Your Eyes’ which left the audience hysterically crying and joining in with the signs, it was an amazing feeling and I was very proud of the whole group as it was soooo beautiful to watch.
Have a watch and see what you think…..

Also my colleague Jayne Fletcher is a SignSong performer and we are slowly building up a portfolio of songs which she has turned into pop videos. She is the most amazing performer and once again it is just beautiful to watch…. In Birmingham in September we have a big festival called ArtsFest which celebrates all different kinds of art across the whole city… on the Sunday my boyfriends band ‘The Fillmore Gears’ www.myspace.com/thefillmoregears will be performing their set and Jayne will be joing them on stage to perform with them their song ‘Same Old Lies’. If you want to have a look at Jayne in action……

Hope you enjoy the clips…

Emma,
Thanks so much for sharing the information. It is always interesting to know what our friends across the pond are doing. There’s so much to catch up on. On this side, we have D-PAN. You’re probably familiar with them but to be on the safe side, I’m including their website URL: http://www.d-pan.com/index.html
Do stay in touch and keep us posted.
